Cox receives NASA PSL Certificate of Recognition

Plainview, N.Y. August 3, 2011 — Cox has been working with NASA Glenn Research Tunnel for the past few years on an icing simulation system similar to its own in-house tunnel capabilities. There have been several incidents where airline pilots have lost power from at least one engine while flying through glaciated clouds (large amounts of ice particles in the cloud). As a result of incidents, the FAA has issued new regulations to certify engines for flying in these harsh environments. This required that new ground test facilities be built to verify compliance with the new regulations. NASA awarded Cox a contract to develop a system that creates icing clouds in NASA's Propulsion Systems Laboratory where engines are normally tested without the icing conditions.

Cox's staff of engineers and technicians designed and built a spray rig that was shipped to NASA in March of 2011. This system is capable of creating clouds of liquid droplets as well as ice particles. It has already been installed at NASA as shown in the photo above and will undergo calibration over the next few months.
